Over 800 million people speak Hindi worldwide as both first and second language speakers. It's mostly spoken in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Fiji, Maritius, Suriname, Trinidad, Tobago, and Guyana. The Dhar India Studies Program offers 3 years of Hindi language instruction.Beginning Hindi-Urdu is a combined class in which Hindi and Urdu undergraduate students are placed together along with graduate students. Undergraduate students can fulfill the foreign language requirement by finishing two years of Hindi. Aside from these courses, we offer an Independent Study (Readings in Hindi) for those who want to continue to improve their linguistic skills and to explore Hindi literature seriously. We conduct the Hindi Proficiency test every semester for students who want to test out of their foreign language requirement on the Bloomington campus and at IU's other satellite campuses.
